Dr Robert Gropel

Dr. Robert Gropel with his cat

Dr Robert Gropel is a long-time local in the area having grown up in Eaglemont. He played for the Ivanhoe Knights Basketball team for 12 years and worked at the Ivanhoe East IGA supermarket (known then as Knorrs) for a number of years whilst at high school. Rob always knew he wanted to be a vet and has a strong passion for animal welfare. During university he spent several months volunteering in animal shelters in Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and Micronesia.  He graduated from the University of QLD in 2005 and worked in mixed practice for 2 years gaining experience in horses and small animals. Since then he has worked at the major animal hospitals in Melbourne including the Lort Smith Animal Hospital, RSPCA and the Animal Emergency Centres where he has gained invaluable experience with a high number of cases in medicine, surgery and emergencies.

Dr Rob believes that a combination of ongoing education and experience is the key to providing animals with the best care possible. He is leading the profession with a prestigous Membership in Small Animal Medicine, a Masters of Small Animal Practice through Murdoch University, a 12 month training certificate in Ultrasonography through the University of Sydney and a training course in advanced cruciate repair. Reaching 20 years of experience, there is not much Dr Rob hasn't seen or done in the veterinary profession.

Dr Rob has the privelage of looking after the two best adopted children in the world (according to him): Comfyshoes (pictured here with Rob) and Tinkerbell, who are very much adored and spoiled.

Head Nurse
Brooklyn Laureyssens

She grew up in a country town and was surrounded by animals from a very young age. Her favourite early childhood game was using her fake doctors kit on her cat...and any other animal she could find, including lizards, rabbits, chickens, horses and frogs! Inevitably, the fake stethoscope was traded in for a real one and Karrie could not be happier.

She completed her Certificate 4 in Veterinary Nursing in 2012, and was lucky enough to receive an award for Excellence in Emergency and Critical Care Nursing by her superiors.

Karrie is extremely passionate about her role in the clinic and treats all patients as if they were her own. She has two cats, "Bishop" and "Samson" and is the first to admit that she is a crazy cat person.

Having worked with Dr Rob in the past, Karrie jumped at the opportunity to work alongside him once again and cannot wait to meet all the pets of Ivan

hoe East and surrounds!

Senior Nurse

Nic with puppies

Nicola (Nic) is Melbourne born and raised and currently lives in Hurstbridge surrounded by wildlife and trees. Nic was fascinated with animals from a young age and had many pets growing up. Her love of animals and keen interest in welfare led her to a career in veterinary nursing and she is currently completing her cert IV.

She has also volunteered for many animal organisations such as Guide Dogs Victoria, Edgar's mission, RSPCA and many wildlife shelters. Nic has worked in may Melbourne based veterinary clinics, most recently at the Lort Smith Animal Hospital where she first worked with Dr Rob.

In her spare time Nic and her partner Jess run their own wildlife shelter which keeps them very busy! They also have a dog, ducks, two old cats and a talking parrot.

Nic is excited to be part of the experienced and caring staff at the Ivanhoe East Animal Hospital and looks forward to getting to know our clients and their pets. She is our local wildlife / pocket pet husbandry expert so if you have any questions about looking after your rabbits or pocket pets be sure to ask Nic!
